Exult, let them exult, the hosts of heaven,<\/span>
\nexult, let Angel ministers of God exult,<\/span>
\nlet the trumpet of salvation<\/span>
\nsound aloud our mighty King’s triumph!<\/span><\/p>\n

Be glad, let earth be glad, as glory floods her,<\/span>
\nablaze with light from her eternal King,<\/span>
\nlet all corners of the earth be glad,<\/span>
\nknowing an end to gloom and darkness.<\/span><\/p>\n

Rejoice, let Mother Church also rejoice,<\/span>
\narrayed with the lightning of his glory,<\/span>
\nlet this holy building shake with joy,<\/span>
\nfilled with the mighty voices of the peoples.<\/span><\/p>\n

(Therefore, dearest friends,<\/span>
\nstanding in the awesome glory of this holy light,<\/span>
\ninvoke with me, I ask you,<\/span>
\nthe mercy of God almighty,<\/span>
\nthat he, who has been pleased to number me,<\/span>
\nthough unworthy, among the Levites,<\/span>
\nmay pour into me his light unshadowed,<\/span>
\nthat I may sing this candle’s perfect praises).<\/span><\/p>\n

(<\/span>Deacon:<\/i> <\/span><\/span>The Lord be with you.<\/span>
\nPeople:<\/i> <\/span><\/span>And with your spirit.)<\/span>
\nDeacon:<\/i> <\/span><\/span>Lift up your hearts.<\/span>
\nPeople:<\/i> <\/span><\/span>We lift them up to the Lord.<\/span>
\nDeacon:<\/i> <\/span><\/span>Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.<\/span>
\nPeople:<\/i> <\/span><\/span>It is right and just.<\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

It is truly right and just,<\/span>
\nwith ardent love of mind and heart<\/span>
\nand with devoted service of our voice,<\/span>
\nto acclaim our God invisible, the almighty Father,<\/span>
\nand Jesus Christ, our Lord, his Son, his Only Begotten.<\/span><\/p>\n

Who for our sake paid Adam’s debt to the eternal Father,<\/span>
\nand, pouring out his own dear Blood,<\/span>
\nwiped clean the record of our ancient sinfulness.<\/span><\/p>\n

These, then, are the feasts of Passover,<\/span>
\nin which is slain the Lamb, the one true Lamb,<\/span>
\nwhose Blood anoints the doorposts of believers.<\/span><\/p>\n

This is the night,<\/span>
\nwhen once you led our forebears, Israel’s children,<\/span>
\nfrom slavery in Egypt<\/span>
\nand made them pass dry-shod through the Red Sea.<\/span><\/p>\n

This is the night<\/span>
\nthat with a pillar of fire<\/span>
\nbanished the darkness of sin.<\/span><\/p>\n

This is the night<\/span>
\nthat even now throughout the world,<\/span>
\nsets Christian believers apart from worldly vices<\/span>
\nand from the gloom of sin,<\/span>
\nleading them to grace<\/span>
\nand joining them to his holy ones.<\/span><\/p>\n

This is the night<\/span>
\nwhen Christ broke the prison-bars of death<\/span>
\nand rose victorious from the underworld.<\/span><\/p>\n

Our birth would have been no gain,<\/span>
\nhad we not been redeemed.<\/span>
\nO wonder of your humble care for us!<\/span>
\nO love, O charity beyond all telling,<\/span>
\nto ransom a slave you gave away your Son!<\/span><\/p>\n

O truly necessary sin of Adam,<\/span>
\ndestroyed completely by the Death of Christ!<\/span><\/p>\n

O<\/span> <\/span><\/span>happy fault<\/a>
\nthat earned for us so great, so glorious a Redeemer!<\/span><\/p>\n

O truly blessed night,<\/span>
\nworthy alone to know the time and hour<\/span>
\nwhen Christ rose from the underworld!<\/span><\/p>\n

This is the night<\/span>
\nof which it is written:<\/span>
\nThe night shall be as bright as day,<\/span>
\ndazzling is the night for me, and full of gladness.<\/span><\/p>\n

The sanctifying power of this night<\/span>
\ndispels wickedness, washes faults away,<\/span>
\nrestores innocence to the fallen, and joy to mourners,<\/span>
\ndrives out hatred, fosters concord, and brings down the mighty.<\/span><\/p>\n

On this, your night of grace, O holy Father,<\/span>
\naccept this candle, a solemn offering,<\/span>
\nthe work of bees and of your servants’ hands,<\/span>
\nan evening sacrifice of praise,<\/span>
\nthis gift from your most holy Church.<\/span><\/p>\n

But now we know the praises of this pillar,<\/span>
\nwhich glowing fire ignites for God’s honour,<\/span>
\na fire into many flames divided,<\/span>
\nyet never dimmed by sharing of its light,<\/span>
\nfor it is fed by melting wax,<\/span>
\ndrawn out by mother bees<\/span>
\nto build a torch so precious.<\/span><\/p>\n

O truly blessed night,<\/span>
\nwhen things of heaven are wed to those of earth,<\/span>
\nand divine to the human.<\/span><\/p>\n

Therefore, O Lord,<\/span>
\nwe pray you that this candle,<\/span>
\nhallowed to the honour of your name,<\/span>
\nmay persevere undimmed,<\/span>
\nto overcome the darkness of this night.<\/span>
\nReceive it as a pleasing fragrance,<\/span>
\nand let it mingle with the lights of heaven.<\/span>
\nMay this flame be found still burning<\/span>
\nby the Morning Star:<\/span>
\nthe one Morning Star who never sets,<\/span>
\nChrist your Son,<\/span>
\nwho, coming back from death’s domain,<\/span>
\nhas shed his peaceful light on humanity,<\/span>
\nand lives and reigns for ever and ever.<\/span>
