This might have been one of them. Ambrose, Bishop of Milan in the late fourth century, was known for his allegorical interpretation of Old Testament passages, but he was also known for his hymns. This one dates from 397 AD:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Savior Of The Nations, Come!<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Savior of the nations, come;<br \/>\nVirgin\u2019s Son, here make Thy home!<br \/>\nMarvel now, O heaven and earth,<br \/>\nThat the Lord chose such a birth.<\/p>\n<p>Not by human flesh and blood;<br \/>\nBy the Spirit of our God<br \/>\nWas the Word of God made flesh,<br \/>\nWoman\u2019s offspring, pure and fresh.<\/p>\n<p>Wondrous birth!
